Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Show Opener: Nicholas K Fall/Winter 2013

So as the Aerosmith song goes, I’m back in the saddle again. You’ll understand why I probably have Aerosmith on the brain when you realize how often you interact with Richard Renda, the unofficial riser God who makes sure everyone gets a clean shot and is also a dead ringer for Steven Tyler, while you are shooting New York Fashion Week. This season Richard hooked me up with Edward James of Fashion Watch and NewYorkFashionWeek.com and I’m thrilled to be helping them get some fun social media coverage through my instagram feed that is focusing on giving you the behind the scenes perspective.

I started out Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week backstage at the Nicholas K show, courtesy of People’s Revolution. Their show was the opener for the Fall/Winter 2013 Season. There I got some info on the super smokey eye look the girls were rocking in the show. The people from NYX Professional Makeup created this look that you could easily do when going out on the weekend. What I love about NYX is that they are super affordable. Pretty much every product they offer is under $10! Makeup Artist Tina Turnbow created the look using the jumbo eye pencil in Black Bean, Nude Matte Shadow in Confession and Stripped, Kohl Kajal Black Liner, and an Eyebrow Pencil in Brown. For the lips they used the wonder pencil (which is a nude color), and for the cheeks highlight and contour powder combined with the jumbo eye pencil in Milk. Everything was anchored with NYX’s HD studio Photogenic Foundation and Makeup Setting Spray-Matte Finish. Links of the products are provided at the end of this post.

Then it was time to hit the press riser. Richard gave me a great spot right up front. The the staff went out and pulled off the plastic for the first show of the season, and then the lights went down, it was time to start Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Frankly, it was hard for me to contain my excitement and not do a little happy dance right there. But I refrained.  And then the lights come on bright as the sun.  It’s a wonder the first model out doesn’t fall over from the blinding lights!

The show included both Men’s and Women’s looks and the words I feel best describe this collection for Fall and Winter 2013/2014 is comfy and cozy.  It was filled to the brim with lux fabrics, furs, and knits that looked super snuggly.  The looks seemed perfect for a vacation to Deer Valley or an arctic exploration.  Many of the models were wearing goggles that were reminiscent of ski goggles.  At first I thought, when would you ever use something like that when you aren’t skiing? Then Nor’easter Nemo hit New York City today and I thought to myself, man what I would give for a pair of those goggles from the Nicholas K show!    Other than the goggles, the big accessory, and I do mean BIG, were the pendants that were made of a long cord and a GIANT crystal.  Most of the crystals were large quartz crystals in their natural raw form.

To get the Nicholas K look for yourself dress in draped layers.  You can get the base layer of a shirt with sleeve with thumbholes from athletic lines like lululemon and add on a knit capelet.  So far this season one of my favorite trends is definitely the implementation of capes, both short and long.  If you aren’t ready to jump into a cape, try an infinity scarf instead.   At the end of the show, being a dog person and missing my dog Buddy who is back home in Boston, I was thrilled to see Nicholas and Christopher bring out their dog Jake.  He was super well behaved and had an excellent runway walk.
